When i was about 10 my father got MS. By the time I was 18 he was confined to a wheelchair and had little if any control over his functions, or ability to make a rational decision. By the time i got out of the Marines, he was basically in a vegetable state in a facility, that would roll him over from time to time for bed sores. I spoke with my mom and family many times about doing the "deed" for him... regardless of law NO human being should be left to whither and die that way.
He was kept "alive" by DR's required to do so... Never even blinked an eye... His body finally gave out when I was 26. My dad, 6'2 200, plus pound former Marine Drill Instructor was 80 lbs when we buried him...

opt for euthanasia if it is available? We treat our animals with more dignity.

Morris, I think this is the perfect opportunity to talk about euthanasia for people. If it's good enough for our pets, it's good enough for us. I've seen friends and family members suffer horribly, and some have told me they'd opt for euthanasia if it were available to them.

Steve, I heard from Molly. She said the lady who dropped off the dog at the shelter had found the dog herself. They are trying to track down the dog's original owners.

We have dealt with the loss of two dogs, and we have suffered along with some of our clients who have had to have pets put down, including a 21-year-old cat this week. It's traumatic but necessary. It seems to me that pet owners need to understand that pets rely on their humans for their well-being. That must include when their lives are so unhappy that the decision must be made for them.

I strongly disagree that human euthanasia should be tacked onto any discussion about putting down pets. Humans have the ability to make decisions about their lives. Suicide (sometimes called the last cowardly act in life) in the guise of euthanasia is abhorrent to me.

I asked the reporter who wrote the story but haven't heard back. The story said a woman brought the dog into the shelter and dropped it off. Some people think of animals as disposable. Such a shame.

Hey Del - Was there any investigation into the how the dog got as bad as it was? Seems like the original owners are more negligent than the director who made the right decision to euthanize.
